“It is only possible to proof read with knowledge – knowledge of the structure of the English language and the accepted forms of English spelling. Some children – a few – will acquire these skills automatically through reading – their eyes will tell them something is wrong…. These are the few lucky ones. It is the others we need to be concerned about, and we need to think about:
a) how we are going to effectively teach them to spell;
b) how we are going to ensure that their understanding of written English grammatical structure will not fail them; and
c) how we are going to teach them to proof read.
I believe that the teaching of these three things can go hand in hand – in fact should go hand in hand until every pupil has the knowledge and ability to accurately proof read anything he writes in school – or, which is probably more important, will want, or need, to write as an adult.”
– Violet Brand, SEN Team lecture, Bolton, 8.3.90
Violet Brand is celebrated as one of the original pioneers and advocates of multi-sensory phonics and a major figure in raising awareness of dyslexia and how to overcome it at a time when the educational establishment was hostile to both concepts. Over time her ideas have been vindicated: Her ‘Spelling Made Easy’ series for primary schools and ‘Remedial Spelling’ diagnostic tests and basic structured word lists were hugely successful, and she has been honoured with an MBE for Services To Adult Literacy and a Lifetime Academic Achievement Award by the British Dyslexia Association. Spelling Made Easy is the scheme of choice for an increasing number of schools in the UK and is being gradually adopted in other parts of the world where English is spoken (and not only Ireland and former commonwealth countries where Violet toured and established a following – we have, for instance, recently fulfilled a large state order for Oman and have a lot of interest from the UAE).
We want to supplement the existing ‘Be The Teacher’ books in our range with a series of proofreading books designed to be used in tandem with the new Revised Spelling Made Easy teacher books. It will therefore comprise four books, one corresponding to each level of the teacher books and following the same scheme, and they will cross-reference each other.
If you are familiar with the Spelling Made Easy range, if you are respected among your peers as an outstanding teacher of literacy and, most importantly, if you are passionate about ensuring that all children have the skills they need to become good readers, then we would love to hear from you.
Whether you are a young, ambitious and innovative teacher eager to make an impact in your profession, whether you are nearing the end of your teaching career with a wealth of knowledge and experience you are keen to pass on, or wherever you may lie in between, this opportunity is suitable for you if you are exceptional.
Direct remuneration will be by way of modest advance against an equal share in royalties with Violet Brand on these new books.
If you are interested in working with us, please send a brief personal statement and your CV to firstname.lastname@example.org. I am also available for informal enquiries.
We look forward to hearing from you!
